In the second half of the 16th century Havana became the largest port in the region, the assembly point where fleets from across the Americas gathered before crossing the Atlantic.
The Panama Canal opened in 1914, creating a direct Atlantic–Pacific route. It shifted shipping geography but Cuba remained positioned near Gulf entrances, U.S. coasts and northern Caribbean routes.
