Marina Gaviota Cabo de San Antonio

Guanahacabibes (Los Morros)Port of entry
Marina Gaviota Cabo de San Antonio, Cuba

Cuba's westernmost marina, a first landfall from the Yucatán Channel.

At Los Morros on the Guanahacabibes Peninsula — Cuba's westernmost point and a UNESCO biosphere reserve — this small marina is the first Cuban landfall for boats crossing the Yucatán Channel from Mexico's Isla Mujeres and Cancún, with clearance on site. It is a remote outpost at the end of a long, wild peninsula of dry forest, caves and empty coast.

Cruising grounds

The peninsula shelters the marina from the prevailing weather and marks the turning point between Cuba's north and south coasts. It is the launch point for the pristine reef diving of María la Gorda, one of the best-preserved dive sites in the Caribbean, and the start of the passage east along the Colorados reef toward Pinar del Río and Havana.

Getting there & what’s nearby

Los Morros is one of the most isolated spots in Cuba, reached overland only by a long drive through Guanahacabibes National Park from the tobacco town of Pinar del Río. Facilities are minimal — the appeal is the diving, the untouched nature reserve and the sense of being at land's end.

Sailing season & conditions

At Cuba’s westernmost tip the marina sits where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean, and the Yucatán Channel crossing to and from Mexico can be lively, with the Loop Current and opposing winds kicking up a short, steep sea. The peninsula shelters the anchorage itself from the prevailing weather, but this is a remote coast on which to be caught out. Winter brings the most settled crossings; during the June-to-November hurricane season, systems readily form in the nearby western Caribbean.
