One Week in Cuba
Seven days fits two bases comfortably, three if you accept spending a real part of the week in transit. The most common mistake is treating Cuba as small — it is roughly 1,250 km end to end, and the roads do not shorten it.

The western week
Havana and Viñales is the classic pairing and the one that works best on a first visit: three or four days in the capital, two or three in the tobacco country of Pinar del Río, and a transfer between them short enough not to eat a day.
It gives you the two most distinct faces of the country — dense colonial city and rural valley — without a long drive between them.
The central week
Havana, then Cienfuegos or Santa Clara, then Trinidad is the other strong seven-day shape. Trinidad earns the days: a colonial town small enough to walk, with the Escambray behind it and Playa Ancón in front.
Adding Varadero to either route is possible but usually a mistake in a week — the resort strip rewards a longer, slower stay rather than two nights squeezed between cities.
What does not fit
Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa sit at the far eastern end. Reaching them overland from Havana consumes the better part of two days each way, which does not survive a seven-day trip. If the east is the priority, fly into Holguín or Santiago and treat it as a separate trip.
Book the intercity legs before you arrive where you can. Coaches on the Havana–Viñales and Havana–Trinidad corridors sell out in high season, and losing half a day to a full bus costs proportionally more in a week than in a fortnight.
