Una de las siete villas originales
Fue la primera de las siete villas trazadas por Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, fundada en 1511 como Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Baracoa. Aquí nacieron: María Caridad Colón, atleta cubana (n. 1958), José Legrá, boxeador cubano-español (1943–2026) y Aliannis Urgellés, futbolista cubano (n. 1985). Primera de las siete y primera capital de la isla hasta que Santiago le quitó el título en 1515, Baracoa quedó tanto tiempo encerrada entre montañas que hasta los años sesenta, cuando se abrió el paso de La Farola, sólo se llegaba por mar.
