Cárdenas is the 15th most-populated Cuban city and the second most populated one not being a provincial seat, after Manzanillo.

The town dates from 1828. Born here: Danell Leyva, Cuban-American gymnast (b. 1991), Virgilio Piñera, Cuban writer (1912–1979) and Ernest Sosa, American philosopher (b. 1940). Died here: José Arechabala, Spanish industrialist (1847–1923).
