The town dates from 1689. Born here: Rubén González, Cuban pianist (1919–2003), Yoanka González, Cuban cyclist (b. 1976) and Benny Paret, Cuban boxer (1937–1962). Died here: Joseph Vandor, Venerable Catholic (1909–1979), Acela de Armas Pérez, Cuban chess player (1954–2021) and María Dámasa Jova Baró, Cuban poet (1890–1940).
