Hiking in Cuba
Walking in Cuba is better than the flat reputation suggests, but it is concentrated: three mountain systems and a set of national parks, most of which require you to walk with a registered guide.

The ranges
The Sierra Maestra in the southeast is the serious one, rising to Pico Turquino at 1,974 m — the highest point in the country, climbed over two or three days from Santo Domingo in Granma. It is also dense with revolutionary history; the guerrilla headquarters at La Plata sits inside the park.
The Escambray, behind Trinidad, is the accessible middle ground: Topes de Collantes gives waterfall walks and cloud forest within a short drive of the coast. In the far east, the Alejandro de Humboldt national park near Baracoa protects some of the most biodiverse forest in the Caribbean.
Viñales is walking, not hiking
The mogotes of Viñales — limestone towers rising out of tobacco country in Pinar del Río — are the image most people hold of rural Cuba. The walking there is gentle valley routes between farms and caves rather than mountain work.
It is the easiest place in the country to spend a day on foot without arranging anything in advance, which is a large part of why it is so heavily visited.
Guides, permits and conditions
Most national parks require a registered guide, and Pico Turquino requires one without exception. This is regulation rather than upselling, and guides are arranged at the park entrance or through accommodation.
Heat and afternoon rain shape the day between May and October, so start early. Carry more water than you expect to need, and remember that specific gear cannot be replaced locally — bring boots that are already broken in.
