El pueblo data de 1774. Aquí nacieron: Liadagmis Povea, atleta cubana (n. 1996), Miguel "Angá" Díaz, músico cubano (1961–2006) y César Valdés, baloncestista cubano (1942–2014). Aquí murieron: Francisca González Ruz, poetisa cubana (1836–1895).
